The supported version must match the major version number of Europa Universalis IV (1.8, 1.9, etc.) being used by the launcher in order to be loaded into the game. It simply tells the launcher the directory it should look in, the name it should display to the user, and (as of Patch 1.8) the supported version of Europa Universalis IV.
